History

The Miners’ were co-founded by Keith Marlowe and Matt Maguire in 2007. The original lineup consisted of pieces of two late 1980’s Philadelphia alternative bands, Tornado 5 (Keith plus Andy Shahan) and The Bensons (Matt plus Jeff Smith). The original lineup had Matt on lead vocals and guitar, Keith on lead guitar and backing vocals, Andy on drums and backing vocals, and Jeff on bass.

In early 2009, Matt and Jeff left the band but Keith and Andy decided to re-tool the lineup having Keith move to lead vocals and taking on all songwriting duties. Keith wanted to lead the band deeper into the Alt Country sound they are now known for, so they added David Thornburgh on pedal steel guitar. They also brought in Scott Donnini to replace Jeff on bass. The Miners seem to replace bass players with the frequency of Spinal Tap drummers (only not as a result of unaccountable deaths), so in 2013, Sean Benge replaced Scott on bass and a year later current bassist, Gregg Hiestand, replaced Sean.

In 2015, Andy left The Miners and was replaced by current drummer Vaughn Shinkus. In 2017, David Thornburgh was replaced briefly by multi-instrumentalist Jim Hartman who played lap steel and electric guitar. Upon Jim’s departure in late 2018, The Miners decided to employ a stable of of the area’s top pedal steel and electric guitar players lead by pedal steel guitarist and multi-instrumentalist, Brian Herder. From time to time, The Miners lineup may include other instrumentalists including fiddle and banjo players.
